Editorial Note

Passacaglia, originally written for piano (1922), has long drawn the interest of organists. Melville Smith first transcribed the Passacaglia for organ and performed it, but the edition was never published. In 1981, the organist William Owen completed Melville’s work and played the organ transcription in New York. The present Boosey & Hawkes edition was transcribed in the 1980s by John Fesperman.
